south easterBoundaries,SESIAHS, which will also be referred as the Area, covers approximately 6south easterBoundaries,331 sqsouth eastern sydney area health serviceuare kilometres, stretching from Sydney Harbour in the north to Durras in the south. The Area includes highly urbanised areas of eastern Sydney, southern Sydney, Wollongong and Port Kembla, which contrast with the predominantly rural areas of Kiama and Shoalhaven. Heavy industry is concentrated in and around Port Botany, Wollongong and Port Kembla. Lucas Heights Atomic Research Centre is located on the western perimeter of the Area.

On January 1, 2005 the Illawarra Area Health Service and South Eastern Sydney Area Health Service were amalgamated into a single entity, the South Eastern Sydney and Illawarra Area Health Service (SESIAHS).

The Area comprises 13 local government areas (LGAs) namely: Botany, Hurstville, Kiama, Kogarah, Randwick, Rockdale, Shellharbour, Shoalhaven, Sutherland, City of Sydney (part, shared with Sydney South West Area Health Service), Waverley, Wollongong and Woollahra.
