eastern shorEastern Shore Rural Health receives $175k Kresge Grant,ONLEY — Eastern Shore Rural Health announces it met its $355,000 goal to receive the prestigious Kresge Foundation Challenge Grant in the amount of $175,000.

The new Onley Community Health Center (OCHC), located on Badger Lane in Onley, is 20,000 square feet with 40 exam rooms, digital x-ray, two labs and so much more.

Eighty volunteers worked on the campaign, chaired by George McMath. Beginning with the first major gift from the Bannon Foundation and concluding with the Kresge Foundation grant, over 450 members of our community, including foundations, churches, garden clubs, service organizations and individuals donated to the campaign.

Approximately $1.8 million was raised through a capital campaign for the new Onley Community Health Center, which opened in July.

The Kresge Foundation is a $3.1 billion private, national foundation that seeks to influence the quality of life for future generations through its support of nonprofit organizations in six fields of interest: health, the environment, community development, arts and culture, education and human services. ESRHS originally applied for the Kresge Challenge Grant in December 2008, received notice of acceptance in December 2009 and was then given 10 moeastern shore rural healthnths to raise the remaining funds to meet the challenge requirements.

OCHC serves its diverse population six days a week by providing routine primary health care and lab work. It also provides care for sports injuries and on-the-job accidents. OCHC offers specialized events every year, including days for flu shots, sports physicals for athletes and educational events for pediatric asthma patients.

The lab now offers extended hours, opening at 7:30 a.m. each weekday. By serving the community on a day-to-day basis for primary care to include annual physicals and wellness visits, acute illness and chronic disease management, OCHC has made itself an integral part of the medical community.
