eastern ontaTask force will continue – The Cornwall Standard Freeholder – Ontario, CA

CORNWALL — A task force of law enforcement and health care officials is ramping up for another year of combating drug abuse.

Robyn Wharf, one of the Eastern Ontario Health Units members of the OxyContin group, said the team met a couple of weeks ago to discuss plans for 2011.

it aint perfect, overall agree with your post. I am unable to repeat a prescription until the last day of the previous prescription TO THE DAY and/or PILL. According to my Specialist Dr., paranoid pharmacies are interferring with his prescribing options for patients. The system is too strict for the honest Patients. Unfortunately, the taxpayers are covering the cost of my unecessary visits to the one and only Pain Management Dr.

She said they are on the right track, especially now that the provincial government has started cracking down on the same issue. Late last year they introduced legislation that will track prescription narcotics, ensuring addicts dont hop from pharmacy to pharmacy loading up on pills.

MacIntosh said while strides have been made, there is no doubt the task force is still a necessary action group in the community.

Its more than it was . . . 18 months ago, she said. (Feedback) has all been positive, what weve received.

Absolutely . . . we have to continue our fight against OxyContin, she said.

This medication is legally/medically prescribed for chronic pain Patients with cancer, severe injuries etc… This task force comment seems biased against a legally prescribed medication! The system is already very srict. I agree with the education component against abuse, but adjust the one sided campaign.

lol to ne1 w ho thinks arresting ppl and sending them to jail really helps the community. i think they should go crawl back under the rock they came from and kill themselfs. i talked to people who have been to jail and they say as soon as they get in jail ppl expect them to have a package of drugs and if they dont have it they get the fuk beaten out of them.. if they do have it they get beaten up and get the package taken from them. and thats justice? fuk brenda macintosh and fuk whoever is in charge of sentencing people. you guys can take a shot to the head for all i care u heartless idiots. you never did sht for this community so you guys should have ur badge taken away u useless fuks

Its been a worthwhile investment in our community, added Const. Brenda MacIntosh of the Cornwall police, also a member of the task force. We feel we are progressing, theres been lots accomplished.

We have been there, but Cornwall seems to know more, she said.

There are also plans for a greater town-hall meeting for the community to ask questions. Dates havent been nailed down yet; Wharf said the task forces working groups will be meeting soon and more concrete plans.

While the local OxyContin task force has made progress over the past year, the groupÕs members, which include law enforcement and health care officials, understand there is much more work to be accomplished in the community.

But Wharf said while the city now has a better understanding of the dangers of OxyContin use, the surrounding counties need more education.

It always boils down to education, agreed Maceastern ontaTask force will continue – The Cornwall Standard Freeholder – Ontario, CAIntosh.

Yes bush 24… the thing for patients with powerful med perscriptions is lock up the meds in a secure place and addicts cant` get them . tigther controls at the pharmacies like a patient identification number could be given and ared flag everytime that number is overused throughtout Ontario for the Oxy or whatever drug is dispensed. don`t target the serious pain sufferer or any other person that needs special strong drugs..

The stricter guidelines have me see my Dr. for more frequent smaller prescriptions per year therefore increasing costs for Ministry of Health. Just another hurdle / borderline discrimination against Patients with chronic pain!

Wharf said awareness in Cornwall has grown by leaps and bounds, especially with the airing of a series on narcotics on Cogeco.

They will also be turning their focus to local schools. Wharf said the task force aims to meet with board officials in the coming months to talk about how to bring their message to students.

Ontario is on the same path as we are, said Wharf.

She said the next year will focus resources on Prescott, Russell and North Glengarry.

She said they began with the question of whether or not the task force should continue to exist, but the consensus was that there is still more work to do.

I think we are progress, she said.
